Front wheel fix-up day
Crew: Stephen
Mileage: n/a
Friday was spent on the Green Hummer’s steering and front wheel system. After the unfortunate taco of the fifth trash wheel on the last ride, something had to change! The front wheels have always taken a whole lot of abuse, and the system had gone through several alterations already, even a few alterations as the prototype tricycle. It was a mess!
Stephen took the front wheels and their holders off of the Green Hummer, and loaded up his tricycle with some tools, a sample new wheel, and rode to Johnie’s shed for some welding. The front holders were widened to hold the tougher-style mountain bike wheels, usually quick-release and alloy istead of the old, narrower steel wheels that had all given out before.
The holders were cut up, extended, and widened, reusing as much metal as possible, just for speed’s sake. Then, back into the trike!
Once back home, Stephen gave the ‘new’ holders a good coat of paint, and assembled the Green Hummer’s front end again.
Some nice wheels collected from the bike auction some time ago were installed. QR stuff isn’t usually the best option for a bike that sits outside in a city, but they’ll probably get beat up eventually, anyway. Hopefully they’ll last a little longer!
