Which chain saw to choose for the garden?

There’s no more male tool than the best electric cordless chainsaw. You can cut trees, saw wood, and prepare materials for construction. Compared to a hand saw, an electric or chain saw allows you to work much faster and less tired. It also feels good to use it. Today, we’ll figure out what chainsaws are like and how to choose them.

The electric chain saw does not require engine maintenance and is environmentally friendly compared to gasoline analogues. There are two categories of such tools. Our rating of the best electric chain saws, based on the feedback of masters and dacha owners, as well as the key characteristics of the tool, will help you to choose the appropriate model.

What are the chain saws

Depending on the engine type, an electric saw and a gasoline saw can be distinguished. In the first group, battery-powered tools are singled out separately. Let’s take a closer look at each type and see what to look for when buying.
The tool is equipped with an electric motor and runs on 220 V networks. You do not need to buy fuel and fill the saw. It does not emit exhaust gases, so it is suitable for use indoors. Usually an electric saw is not as noisy as a gasoline powered tool. In most cases it is easier and more convenient to use: the engine does not need to be started manually.

But there are also weaknesses. The electric motor is unstable to voltage fluctuations. What does this mean? Let’s imagine that you have blunt teeth on the chain and you saw the barrel. At the same time, the load on the motor grows – it does not cope and at a critical moment it simply fails. The same thing happens when the voltage drops. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on it, especially when you’re out of town. In addition, the electric saw must not be used in the rain or when the air humidity is high.
The main differences between the electric saw models

Electric saw model

Engine power

The higher this parameter is, the greater the vibrations in the network the tool will withstand. But on the other hand, the weight and size of the saw will also be higher and the price higher. A 1,000 W tool with a motor is suitable for work in the garden, a 1.5-2.5 kW saw is preferable for regular sawing of trees or for construction in the country house. Units with higher values are used for daily long term work.

Location of the motor

There are electric saws with transverse and longitudinal positioning of the motor. The former are usually shorter, more compact, but their center of gravity is shifted, which complicates steering.

Additional functions and parts of chain saws

Smooth start of the motor protects the network from overloads. This is especially true in the countryside, where electrical equipment may not be in the best condition.

The accidental switch-on lockout eliminates injuries. In order for the chain to rotate, the trigger must be released with your thumb and only then must you press the trigger.

The chain brake stops the saw. It is located on top of the tool and is designed as a shield. If the saw is thrown off the work piece, you will automatically press it with your hand.

Thanks to the overheating protection system, the saw stops working when the engine reaches a critical temperature.

Keyless chain tensioning: you manually tighten the handle so that the chain does not sag. No need for a key or screwdriver.

Automatic chain lubrication. The oil pump works together with the saw motor. There is no need to manually apply oil to the chain or dip the entire bar in grease.

Battery power saw

Battery saw

This tool is also equipped with an electric motor, but only runs on battery power. These models, like all electric saws, feature low noise and no exhaust emissions. But their main advantage is that they work independently. You don’t depend on the socket as long as the battery is charged.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages: the battery increases the weight of the saw and takes time to charge. However, the last problem is solved by a spare battery.

Chainsaw classification

Depending on why you need a chainsaw, there are several types of chainsaw.

Household chainsaws

They’re suitable for the country house. The power of such a tool is 1-1.7 kW. Productivity is low, but these saws are also designed to perform work on the site: cut down the tree, level the branches, prepare firewood for a bath or wood for the construction of a barn.

Farmers’ chainsaws

They’re also called semi-professional. The tool withstands long and frequent, up to daily loads. This is the preferred option for those who live in a private home. Such a saw will help in construction, cleaning the area from trees, and preparing firewood for the winter. The power of the devices is 2-3 kW.

Professional felling chainsaws

These tools are designed for professional logging operations. The power of the saws is up to 6 kW. The machines are designed for multi-hour daily loads. These are large and heavy devices capable of cutting wood without interruption for half a day. They are used by employees of specialized organizations, in the farm such tools are not needed.

Which chain saw to choose

If you need a tool for working on a site without electricity, you should definitely buy a chainsaw. For periodic cutting of firewood and tree leveling, devices with a power of 1-1.7 kW and a bus length of 35-45 cm are suitable. For sawing trunks and small construction, choose 2-3 kW saws – they have higher productivity and longer continuous operation time. On a site with a network of 220 V, an electric saw can be used rationally. Depending on the type and intensity of work, choose a tool of either 100 W or 2-3 kW. The electric saw is also suitable for indoor use. When it comes to working seldom and at low loads, a rechargeable tool is the right choice.

Choosing the most powerful and expensive saw is cool, but not practical. Work with the right tool for you.
